Iftar with Cy Vance and Richard Aborn

On Saturday, September 12, 2009, the Association of Muslim American Lawyers (AMAL) hosted Cyrus Vance and Richard Aborn- -two candidates seeking the Democratic Party nomination for the Office of New York County District Attorney.  Leslie Crocker Snyder, the third candidate, was also invited but was unable to attend.  Over 80 people attended the event where Mr. Vance and Mr. Aborn spoke candidly to the Muslim community over an "iftar"--a sundown meal to break the fast of Ramadan--three days before the primary.

Candidates Vance and Aborn spoke about their commitment to reform laws that impose harsh punishments on non-violent criminals and to encourage a system that includes rehabilitation and probation. They also discussed the need for dialogue between the District Attorney's Office and the various communities in Manhattan, as well as the need to promote diversity within the attorney and non-attorney staff in the District Attorney’s office.  AMAL President, Omar Mohammedi, gave the opening speech asking the candidates to comment on their commitment to protect the civil rights of Muslim-Americans and to eliminate hate crimes and police brutality against minorities.

AMAL expressed its gratitude to the candidates for giving the opportunity to Muslim New Yorkers to voice their concerns.  AMAL also encouraged all in attendance to vote in the primary on Tuesday, September 15, 2009.

The event was co-sponsored by the Islamic Center of New York University, Islamic Law Students Association (at NYU School of Law), Muslim American Society (MAS), and Arab Muslim American Federation.
